Spring driving can give KC motorists a nasty splash

On behalf of Hunter & Cassidy Law | May 12, 2020 | Motor vehicle accidents

Kansas City motorists often prefer spring driving over winter driving. But even though the ice and snow have melted away, they can still face many risks. According to recent data, approximately 21% of car crashes are weather-related.

The old saying goes April showers bring May flowers; however, much of that rain can carry over into summer, increasing drivers’ risk of hydroplaning. But by taking the right precautions, motorists can keep themselves and others out of harm’s way.

What is hydroplaning?

Hydroplaning is when a vehicle starts sliding uncontrollably across a slippery surface. If a car is driving fast over wet pavement, water can push its tires off the ground slightly, creating a thin layer between the vehicle and the road. In some cases, this can cause the driver to crash into other cars or pedestrians nearby.

How can I stop hydroplaning?

Even if drivers don’t use cruise control, reduce their speed and avoid every puddle possible, that doesn’t wholly mitigate their risk. If drivers find themselves hydroplaning on the road, they should do the following:

  • Avoid slamming on the brakes: It may be many drivers’ first instinct. However, doing so isn’t always helpful. When drivers hit the brakes on a wet surface, their vehicle can lose any traction it has left with the road. Instead, drivers should take their foot off the gas and focus on correcting the vehicle with the steering wheel.
  • Turn the wheel in the direction the car is sliding: This move can seem counterintuitive. However, this can allow the drivers to regain control of the vehicle by mirroring its direction.
  • Pull the vehicle over and take a few deep breaths: Hydroplaning can feel overwhelming for many drivers. Even if the spin didn’t result in a wreck, it’s a lot to handle. Drivers should pull to the side of the road, take a few deep breaths and calm down before resuming their commute.

If motorists endure pain and suffering from a hydroplaning crash, they’ll want aggressive representation on their side. An experienced personal injury attorney can get victims the compensation they deserve.
