Will we ever have accident-free roads?
Every year, there are millions of car accidents. Around 40,000 people lose their lives annually. Hundreds of thousands suffer injuries, many of which are so serious that they will change the course of their lives.
It feels daunting when you look at these statistics and just consider the sheer amount of accidents in the United States. Is there ever going to be some sort of hypothetical future where we won’t have to worry about this? Are we on course to ever have accident-free roads? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released data on traffic accidents in 2020. According to the agency, the rate of traffic accident fatalities have risen to the highest levels since 2007.
Interestingly, the number of crashes and injuries have decreased. Why the discrepancy? Although there were less accidents in 2020, the NHTSA found an increase in the severity of accidents.

Read the rest of this entry »The number of people killed in motor vehicle crashes reached its lowest level in five years in 2018, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The agency says 36,560 people died on U.S. roadways last year.
While the 2.4% drop in fatalities, overall, was good news, NHTSA reports a disturbing rise in deaths involving pedestrians and cyclists. Last year, 6,283 pedestrians were killed, the highest number since 1990, and a 3.4% increase over 2017.
